Start of Something Special?

The mixture of young talent and veteran players on the Atlanta Braves roster reminds me of another Braves team that did something that no other Atlanta team has done, win a World Series.

The year was 1995, the Braves were winning division titles left and right and they would go on to do so for another ten years.  That team may go down as one of the best Braves teams of all time, but what about the team that they have assembled right now?  Are they better?

Only time will tell, but I think we are on to something special. These two teams have a lot in common, and I think we could see something extraordinary come out of the ATL with these guys, just like in ’95.

Let’s break things down position by position and see if they have what it takes to bring home another World Series championship.

Left Field
He may be young, but I am giving the nod to Ronald Acuna Jr here. Ryan Klesko was good, but Acuna can mash and is more talented.

Center Field
Ender Inciarte is one of the best center fielders in the game today and he can hit the ball pretty well. That is why he wins out over Marquis Grissom

Right Field
I think right field is a close call. David Justice could hit for power. Nick Markakis is better defensively and gets on base more. Markakis takes this one due to contributing more to the team.

Third Base
This is a no-doubter Chipper Jones is a Hall of Famer and today’s team is having some trouble figuring out who they want to play third.

Short Stop
I am giving the slight edge to Dansby Swanson here due to his youth, but Jeff Blauser could definitely hold his own.

Second Base
Mark Lemke was a very serviceable second baseman. Ozzie Albies is going to be a superstar and lead the Atlanta Braves to many great things with this young core of players.

First Base
This is another close call for me because Fred McGriff is a Hall of Famer in my eyes. Freddie Freeman is a great leader and a great player.  I will have to give it to the Crime Dog for now.

The group of catchers the 95 Braves had is better than this group of veterans.

Starting Pitching
No question who wins here.

Relief Pitching
This is a tough one but I believe the 95 team takes this. Once today's Braves figure it out it could be a very dangerous bullpen.

This one is not even a fair fight. Bobby Cox hands down.

The 1995 Atlanta Braves have a slight edge over the Braves of today for now, but I am sure that when we have this same discussion in three or four years things will change.
