Match up of the Day: 6.7.18 Philadelphia Phillies x Chicago Cubs

by: Justin Jones @jjones217

The Philadelphia Phillies will take on the Chicago Cubs today at 2:20 EST at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

The Phillies are in the middle of a National League East race - in third place - but only two games back.

The Cubs are sitting in second place and trail the Milwaukee Brewers only by 1.5 games.

Nick Pivetta (4-4) will get the start for the Phillies against Tyler Chatwood (3-4) for the Cubs.

Philadelphia Phillies

The offense for the Phillies is pretty bad with a team batting average of .233 that ranks 24th in the league. The team is 23rd in runs scored, there isn't much going for the bats in Philadelphia. Odubel Herrera, however, is a bright spot for the offense hitting .304 for the season. Carlos Santana leads the team with 34 RBIs. The Phillies haven't seen Chatwood since May 24th of last year where they could not get a run off of him.

Nick Pivetta has had a strong showing so far this year with a 3.38 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. He has, however, hit a rough patch in his last two starts giving up five earned runs between the two. Where hitting is the rough spot for Philadelphia, pitching is the bright spot. The Phillies are 5th in the majors in ERA.

Chicago Cubs

The Cubs have a great offense being second in the majors in batting average and sixth in runs scored with 294. They have plenty contributors in Chicago from Javier Baez who leads the team in RBI's to Kris Bryant who leads the team in OPS. This offense has players up and down the lineup that can do some damage.

Tyler Chatwood has a 4.02 ERA and has been hit or miss in his starts. In two of the last three starts he only made it through two innings before getting pulled. The Cubs, in general, have a good pitching staff with a 3.22 ERA.

Keys to success

The Phillies will need to attack Chatwood early to get some runs before they turn it over to the bullpen. They will need to lean heavily on Pivetta to keep the game close for the offense to compete.

Chicago will need to hit often against the Pivetta to stay in this game. Chatwood will need to be able to go at least five innings to get to the bullpen.

Final Thoughts

The Cubs and Phillies have solid bullpens both allowing 3.6 runs per game. This should be a good game to watch with two evenly matched teams with different strengths and weaknesses. This game will be on both teams' local networks and MLB.tv.
