Matchup of the Weekend: COL x ARI

by: Justin Jones @jjones217

The Arizona Diamondbacks will take on the Colorado Rockies in Coors Field this weekend. This will be a 3 game series.

The Diamondbacks lead the Rockies by half a game in the National League West. Friday will place Zack Greinke against German Marquez. Saturday will likely have Matt Koch against Chad Bettis. Sunday will have Zack Godley against Kyle Freeland.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks offense is hitting .218 which puts them last in the majors. They are also 27th in OPS and 26th in runs. The Diamondbacks made a move to improve that by adding Jon Jay from the Royals who is hitting over .300 and has an OBP of .363. In June they are hitting better with an average of .249.

The Diamondbacks pitching is 4th in ERA and WHIP. Arizona’s bullpen is 3rd in save percentage with 73%. The rotation has 3.86 ERA which puts them in 12th place which means they depend on the bullpen which is 2nd with an ERA of 2.86. The bullpen is led by Brad Boxberger who has a 31 Ks and 14 saves.

Colorado Rockies

The offense in Colorado is around league average. They are 17th in batting average and 16th in OBP. They make those baserunners count with 274 runs 73 of them being homers. Third baseman Nolan Arenado leads the offense with a .325/.418/.579 slash line and 12 HRs.

The Rockies Pitching staff has struggled this year. They are 22nd in WHIP and 24th in ERA throwing 4.70.

Keys to Success

The Diamondbacks will need let the pitching staff take control of these games while the offense will need to pick it up to support the staff.

The Rockies have an offense with a lot of potential and they will need to unlock that for them to be successful. The pitching staff should be able to keep it close with the Diamondbacks.
