The first round of the MLB draft is over and the picks have been made.

There were a few surprising moves as well as a few that were expected. I will give you my Obvious, Bargain, Fun, Interesting, and Best picks of the First Round.

The Obvious: The Detriot Tigers selected Casey Mize out of Auburn. While his fastball is great and tops out at 96 mph, his splitter is absolutely devastating and is the best pitch in college baseball. Mize has struck out 151 batters and only walked 12 during his 110 innings this year. Casey Mize should become an instant starter for the Tigers and a future star.

The Bargain: The biggest steal of the night for me came with Florida's Brady Singer falling to the Kansas City Royals with the 18th pick. Singer, to most, was regarded as the second-best prospect in the draft.  His fastball can reach 96 mph and he has an above average change. He should be a very solid player for the Royals for years to come. Kansas City got a steal with this pick. As long as it doesn't rain that is!

The Fun: There is always one player in the draft that everyone talks about and this year it was switch-hitting catcher Anthony Seigler out of Cartersville HS. He went to the New York Yankees with the 23rd pick. The amazing fact about this kid is that he's not only a switch-hitting catcher but a switch handed pitcher! No, you didn't read that wrong. Now, I believe the Yankees are primarily going to use him as a catcher but anytime someone can pitch from both sides of the plate it deserves some attention right?

The Interesting: There was only one second baseman taken in the first 35 picks and that was Matt McLain of Beckman High School (CA) with the 25th pick by Arizona. Second base has turned out to be a position of need in the majors and to only see one taken in the first round to me, was a surprise. Was it just a position that didn't have much talent? Possibly. At some point though, teams are going to have to address this position.

The Best: The Kansas City Royals without a doubt won the first round of the MLB Draft. They picked up Brady Singer, the second rated player in the draft with the 18th pick. They also picked up another righty from the University of Florida in Jackson Kowar at 33 who was the 15th rated player. Then, with the next pick in the draft, picked up Daniel Lynch, a lefty arm out of the University of Virginia. The Royals need pitching more than anything and they went after it in the first round and succeeded.

No, this isn't the NFL draft, but it was a very entertaining First round.

A lot of teams filled needs and a lot of young men lived out a lifelong dream. I mean, what else could you possibly ask for?
